7 Steps of Coaching

Think Gray! Coaching has seven distinct steps

Step 1 - Discovery

In this stage we discover the specific coaching needs of the client in order to tailor the program appropriately to meet those needs and capture anticipated benefits.

A key part of this stage of the program is in reaching shared clarity of expectations, resources, organisational support, ethical boundaries and realistic time frames. We will structure conversations around:

Situation - The business context in which the need for coaching has arisen.

Expectations - Clarifying outcomes and outputs whilst recognising the nature of change and therefore agreeing realistic timeframes around capturing the benefits of coaching.

Style - How the coach, client and other stakeholders will work together throughout the program.

Resources - What resources are needed for diagnosis, organisational and management support to ensure the success of the program.

Step 2 - Data Collection

Here we will establish the core goals and baseline measures and measurements as well as agreeing the evaluation methods for the coaching program on four levels:

  • Personal Satisfaction
  • Changes in Knowledge, Skills and Beliefs
  • Changes in Observed Behaviour
  • Business Impact and Return on Investment.

Data collection and analysis may involve the use of formal assessment tools (including tools that may already be established and used within the organisation), structured interviews, personal development plans and business outcomes.

Step 3 - Planning

In this stage we will agree on targeted behaviours and goals as well as agree on the action plans to be implemented so that we capture the benefits of the coaching program.

Step 4 - Coaching Behavioural Change

At this point we are putting the plans into action, coaching clarity of understanding of how things are and what will change. We may be conducting skills based coaching or rehearsal coaching to support implementation. Coaching methods will be adapted as appropriate to get the most effective outcomes.

Step 5 - Measurement

In this stage we are collecting output measures so that we can confirm progress, targeted on the specific behaviours identified in earlier stages. Some of these measures may be self assessed or through observation.

Step 6 - Evaluation

It is essential that outcomes relate to and generate positive business outcomes, whether these are measured as Return On Investment (ROI) or Return On Expectations (ROE). The results may be productivity based, satisfaction based or based on another measure that is valued by the coachee and the business. It may be appropriate to measure against a “control”, which may be a group or individual but must be appropriate and agreeable to the coachee.

Step 7 - Maintaining Momentum

Here the goal is to establish effective self coaching methods and habits, so that the benefits of the coaching program are not lost and that there is no regression to earlier, less effective behaviours. It may also involve agreement to follow up sessions at appropriate intervals after the conclusion of the main coaching program.

These stages present a clear structure that encourages shared understanding of what to expect for all stakeholders. As such, we consistently meet and exceed the expectations of our Clients.
